Workshop June 2005, Wageningen, The Netherlands

Genetically modified food crops and derived foods and feed:

Detection, safety evaluation, traceability and data storage

The Workshop is organized in the framework of The Agreement between RIKILT- Institute of Food Safety, Wageningen University & Research Centre, The Netherlands, the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS), the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (IPPE), the Center for Biosafety Research, Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the School of Life Science and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Background

Rapid development of genetically modified (GM) food crops with input and output traits has resulted in a spectacular increase in cultivation areas for these type of crops, primarily in the USA, Canada, Argentina and China, while the cultivation in Europe is still limited, primarily due to low  acceptance by the public in general. However globalisation of trade has already resulted in an extensive import and export of GM foods/feed across different continents, which emphasizes the urgent need for an intensive exchange of information on GM food crops and derived foods/feed, with respect to their molecular and safety characteristics, and the possibilities to trace such products. This type of information is essential for the scientific risk evaluation of these products, for risk management purposes and for the improvement of public trust in regulatory systems and responsible agencies.

Scope of the meeting

·         to review ongoing activities in China, other South-East Asian countries and the EU concerning the development, safety evaluation, detection and traceability of GM food crops and derived foods and feed,

·         to develop joint research proposals to be submitted in the framework of national and international research programmes,

·         to establish a joint database containing GM constructs and methods for detection and traceability,

·         to organize training courses in the application of test methods and strategies for safety evaluation of GM products, and for traceability
