Safety enhancement of Edible products, Legislation, Analysis and Management, with ASEM countries, by mutual Training & research
SELAMAT is a network organisation that brings together stakeholders dealing with food safety from Europe and Asia to share metho-dology and policy developments related to food quality and safety.
Subjects of mutual interest in relation to research, development, training and trade in this area are:
- 1. Certification & Normalisation (i.e. open exchange of methods, new detection methods, risk assessment).
- 2. Sustainable production systems for food safety (i.e. unintended effects, public perception transparency).
- 3. Trade issues (i.e. market stability, traceability).
Founding members
The SELAMAT platform consists of the SELAMAT consortium (IBET and RIKILT) and its members, the overall coordinator is Dr. H. Marvin (RIKILT).
Self-help food safety network
This is a self-help food safety network where members aspire to assist one another recognising the advantages of working together on common goals.
Background
SELAMAT was initiated in 2004 with EU funding amounting to €597k. This funding was provided as ‘pump-priming’ to help in establishing the network, but with the specific aim that it would become sustainable after 4 years.
During this 4 year period SELAMAT members met four times for 2-day business meetings, organized 1-day workshops in Portugal, Republic of Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia and organized training events (including a Seminar and hands-on training) in Thailand (two events), China, and Vietnam.
A total of 130 scientists attended the hands-on training courses covering topics such as risk assessment, pesticide analysis, mycotoxin analysis and traceability in the food chain.
A total of 600-1000 scientists attended seminars on food safety topics, and the SELAMAT website has proved to be a highly successful vehicle for promotion of the network.
Final report

Selamat Food Safety Legislation database
The Selamat Food Safety Legislation database gives information on and links to websites containing data on food safety regulations and MRL lists world-wide. The database is searchable by country, subject and information type. Search results give access to the websites and the information as well as a description on how the information is presented.
The amount of data in the database is still being extended, so check this link regularly!
